Why?!  I love that word, “why?” It got me in a lot of trouble as a kid.. “But why mum…” “Because I said so!”, she would finally bark back. My mum has the patients of a saint, but after my 50th why question for the hour.. Well…lets just say I found her limit.

Anyway, fast forward to today and I’m still asking a lot of whys. And it’s probably how I found out the fact not every diet guru wants you to know.

Diets and exercise will never work and will be this constant time chore if you can’t get to the underlying reason why you need them in the first place. It’s why you eat even when you were not hungry.  Its why you immediately reached for comfort food after a long stressful day at work, or why you have any unhealthy habits and behaviours in the first place. There may be several factors deeply ingrained in your habits and behaviours that you consciously wouldn’t even notice or know they exist so therefore, not one focus solution will fit.

You’ve learnt to walk, talk, move, drive and eat.  All these actions you do without even thinking,  it’s how your mind works, first you learn it, then you master it, then you do without thinking about it, like auto pilot. 

Some of this learning began even before you even understood works and meanings so your childhood may play a big role in how you learnt how to eat. For example, if you were given sweets or ice cream every time you behaved, or taken away as a punishment, creating the good or bad language around food. You may find yourself reach for the same foods now just because it gives you that unconscious happy memory and good feeling or an unconscious defiance.

Now here comes the good part…

The good news is since you have trained your brain to respond like this, you can also help your brain to not respond this way. You’re in control more than you think.

Knowing what pushes you to eat and facing these emotions gives YOU power over them.  Once you are aware of what drives your habits you can then find ways to train your brain manage these emotions without the need to eat your heart out.

We usually opt to diet or exercise because we are not sure what’s up. We just know that, somehow, something in our eating pattern needs to change and we are told all our lives the only answer is diet and exercise. Well I’m here to tell you its not! Imagine you are walking along a path with all the grass up around you thick, tall, up over your head, you can’t see through it or past it, but the grass on the path is flat.  It’s flat because you’ve walked this path so many times creating a deep groove in the ground with no resistance up ahead. It’s easy to move quickly along this path.
